The scent of summer, the scent of Provence and the scent of… less stress? Lavender is one of the most efficient scents available if you are looking for a calming effect.

Lavender essential oil is actually one of the most well-studied essential oils in terms of its soothing and relaxing effects. Studies have found that aromtatic therapy using lavender oil tends to calm the nervous system, leading to a number of benefical effects, such as lowered blood pressure and heart rate as well as a change of brain waves to a more relaxed state. Lavender is also known for reducing mild insomnia and provide better quality of sleep.

The scent of lavender stimulates the pathways of the brain, including our limbic system, which is the part of the brain that is connected to our emotional responses and our memories. EEG-studies that measure brain waves show significant changes in the frequencies during lavender aromatherapy, proving the relaxing effects of this wonderfully smelling herb.

So what’s the takeaway from all this? Well, try putting a few drops of lavender oil into the water of your next steam sauna before you go to bed, and chances are you will enjoy a particularly good night’s sleep with extra happy dreams.
